چکیده
MEAD, JERE, TAMOTSU TAKISHIMA, AND DAVID LEITH. Stress distribution in lungs: a model of pulmonary elasticity. J. Appl. Physiol. 28(5) : 596-608. 1970.Although lungs are exposed to transpulmonary pressure, the air spaces within are distended solely by forces applied from surrounding tissues. By relating these forces to the areas on which they operate, we derive the effective pressure distending air spaces. In uniformly expanded lungs this pressure probably approximates transpulmonary pressure. In nonuniformly expanded lungs the effective distending pressure differs from transpulmonary pressure, and in the appropriate sign to reduce the nonuniformity. This interdependence of air-space distention bears on a number of aspects of pulmonary function, including the size of air spaces which may be expanded from the gas-free state, the static and dynamic stability of air spaces, the dryness of air spaces, the forces distending airways and blood vessels within lungs, and the distribution of pulmonary edema. The principal function of the mechanical interdependence would appear to be to support uniform expansion of air spaces. The principal functional risk that it entails is increase in capillary transmural pressure in regions which become subjected to abnormally high outward-acting stress.

A model of ventilation of the healthy human lung
This paper presents a model of the lung mechanics which simulates the pulmonary alveolar ventilation. The model includes aspects of: the alveolar geometry; pressure due to the chest wall; pressure due to surface tension determined by surfactant activity; pressure due to lung tissue elasticity; and pressure due to the hydrostatic effects of the lung tissue and blood. The cross-sectional area of ...
متن کاملExact Elasticity Solutions for Thick-Walled FG Spherical Pressure Vessels with Linearly and Exponentially Varying Properties
In this paper, exact closed-form solutions for displacement and stress components of thick-walled functionally graded (FG) spherical pressure vessels are presented. To this aim, linear variation of properties, as an important case of the known power-law function model is used to describe the FG material distribution in thickness direction. Unlike the pervious studies, the vessels can have arbit...
متن کاملA model of perfusion of the healthy human lung
This study presents a model that simulates the pulmonary capillary perfusion. The model describes the lungs as divided into horizontal layers and includes: capillary geometry; capillary wall elasticity; pressure at the pulmonary artery; blood viscosity; the effect of the chest wall; the change in lung height and hydrostatic effects of the lung tissue and of the blood during breathing. The model...
متن کاملEffect of Elasticity Parameter on Viscoelastic Fluid in Pipe Flow Using Extended Pom-Pom Model
In this study prediction of the steady-state flow of branched polymer melts in pipe geometry with finite volume method is presented. Our analysis in this study revealed that;for normal-stress tqq , the XPP model can predict this tensor unlike the other viscoelastic models such as PTT or Gieskus which can not predict tqq...
متن کاملAn Elasticity Solution for Static Analysis of Functionally Graded Curved Beam Subjected to a Shear Force
In this paper, using 2-D theory of elasticity, a closed-form solution is presented for stressdistributions and displacements of a FG curved beam under shear force at its free end. The materialproperties are assumed to vary continuously through the radial direction based on a simple power lawmodel and Poisson’s ratio is supposed to be constant. In order to verify the solution, it is shown that a...
